R--Texas
Seems Texas Governor Rick Perry (R., Texas.) is doing what Governor Kathlees Blanco (D., La.) couldn't, namely evacuating his own people in the face of impending danger.
Of course, there's also the mayoral side of things, isn't there? And with Hurricane Rita, now a Category 4 hurricane, taking dead aim at Galveston, let's just check how the mayor of Galveston is handling things, shall we?
"The real lesson (from Katrina) that I think the citizens learned is that the people in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi did not leave in time. There was great loss of life and property and misery," said Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas. "We just don't want that to happen here. We've always asked people to leave earlier, but because of Katrina, they are now listening to us and they're leaving as we say." Dallas Morning News News for Dallas, Texas Texas/Southwest
I cannot locate Mayor Thomas' political affiliation, so if anyone knows what it is, please e-mail me at ladypriory@yahoo.com Regardless of her affiliation, however, she has managed to stick by her city in a time of crisis. Galveston was all but destroyed in 1900, when 8000 people died in a devastating hurricane. They're prepared today, something that cannot even remotely be said about Louisiana Governor Blanco (D.) or New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin (D.).
