Thank God for Idiots

From a group I subscribe to, this little gem (all names/links/identifiers have been removed, obviously):

"I received an email at my website from a family coming to visit my area. Their son, who's going to turn 16 just had a change of heart concerning his life's choice of career. Seems he went from engineering to conservation. They have asked me if I could help them find some volunteer work here while they'll be here." (Italics added by me)

Wow. Um, when I read this, I wasn't sure whether I wanted to laugh or cry. I belong to several liberal-leaning groups (finger on the pulse...), and this one is, as you can tell from context I'm sure, devoted to global warming. A 16 year old boy, his life before him, makes the decision to switch from engineering to ceonservation. What a sane decision. So glad his parents think he's doing the right thing with his life. I hope they're ready, of course, to accept the consequences of said decision. Such as paying for their grandkids to go to school. And helping Junior out with rent, for the rest of his life, assuming he doesn't live with them anyway.

Anything to save Planet Earth, I guess. I know a teenaged girl who fully (and vocally) believes that animal life is vastly more important than human life. She would willingly give her life for the lives of animals. Literally. Hell, she'd willingly give my life, and yours, for the sake of animals. Hey, maybe I should e-mail this ex-engineer's parents, try to set these two kids up with each other! Whaddya think?

Oh, and in case you think switching from engineering to conservation is a great idea, let's just take a quick peek at the financial ramifications, shall we? Click here to see what Engineers earn per hour starting pay. And I tried finding out what conservationists earn, I really did. Try googling it yourself and see what you come up with. I googled "what do conservationists earn" (just as I googled "what do engineers earn") and was met with page after page of conservationists earning honors. Or going fishing. Or papers written by some conservationist named Earn. No starting salaries. No job openings. Just honors.

Try paying for an apartment with an honor. This 16 year old future welfare recipient is headed in the right direction for sure. He'll make a spectacular volunteer someday.
