Martyrdom
As we wait for some sort of verdict out of Florida, I sit here wondering--does Michael Schiavo not realize that if he continues this fight, if Terri actually dies, he will have created a martyr? She is a Catholic who has been denied the visit of a priest (I wonder what Schiavo's reasoning is on that one) and denied Last Rites and Communion. She already bears the name of 2 saints, not to mention the Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Terri Schiavo is a focus for Catholic prayer--including my own. I wonder if this argument would even faze him, though, seriously. He hasn't shown that he cares for anyone or anything outside the purview of his own mirror (did anyone else catch his oh-so-coiffed-and-blowdried self on telly this morning?), so why should he care if Terri becomes an even greater focus for activism? He'll have won--he'll be free of this woman who, should she ever regain the ability to communicate, might just tell people that he beat her nearly to death and put her in this condition in the first place. (See the Larry King Live link in one of my previous posts for a discussion of the fact that no heart attack was ever documented, and therefore it's highly unlikely to have been a heart attack to cause her initial collapse at home alone with her loving husband...)
Of course, this is a man who kills cats--and we all know where killing animals leads, don't we? They start by killing defenseless animals, then they graduate to the big leagues. And if Terri dies, this particular killer-of-animals will have a human victim to add to his list. A human victim whose voice will only become the more powerful for her death--for after Terri's death, it will be impossible to silence the outcry that will come. Her voice will be heard, loud and clear, from the throats of every human who cares about life, and from every voting booth in every forthcoming election. The left sobbed piteously that it was morals and values that lost them the Presidency, and instead of correcting their mistake, they've signed their own political death warrant with this case. I wonder if they'll beg for mercy when we pull their political plug?
